Settings are starting points

Every feed, speed, depth, stepover and chipload in CHIP is a starting point for a test, not a guarantee of a result. Every CNC machine, spindle or router, cutting tool, material, workholding setup and shop environment is different, and all of those change the right answer. Two people running what looks like the same setup can legitimately need different numbers.

Before you commit a finished workpiece, verify your tool manufacturer's published recommendations for the specific bit you are holding, and test unfamiliar operations on scrap.

What CHIP is not

• It is not a substitute for the manual that came with your machine.
• It is not a substitute for the safety instructions from your machine or tooling manufacturer.
• It is not professional engineering advice, and nothing here should be relied on for structural, load bearing, safety critical or regulated work.
• It is not a replacement for your own judgement standing in front of a running machine.

Risk

CNC machinery is capable of causing serious injury and property damage. Spinning tooling, thrown workpieces, broken cutters, fine airborne dust and fire are all real risks. Read the safety module, follow your manufacturer's guidance, and use appropriate protective equipment.

You are responsible for the safe operation of your own equipment, for verifying settings before use, and for the consequences of the work you produce. Kinetic Carving accepts no liability for damage to equipment, materials, property or persons arising from the use of information on this site.

Accuracy and corrections

CHIP aims to be accurate and to say plainly when something varies rather than inventing precision that does not exist. If you find something wrong, the Feedback button sends it straight to us with the module you were reading attached. Corrections are welcome and they get made.

Privacy and analytics

CHIP uses Google Analytics and the Meta Pixel to count visits and see which modules get read, so the guide can be improved and Kinetic Carving can show relevant ads on Facebook and Instagram. It records pages viewed and general device and location information through cookies. CHIP has no accounts and collects no names. The feedback form sends only what you type into it.
